 Too tired to argue I trudged inside and sat heavily on the sofa. Flynn sat next to me, lifted my hand and laced his fingers in mine. His touch felt warm, safe and intimate.

“I’m here, Valerie,” he murmured softly, squeezing his fingers around mine.

I didn’t feel emotional. Drugs can do that. I felt numb and calm.

Lee was introduced to me as Flynn’s assistant. I studied him while he moved around the tiny kitchen area. He was built like a Sherman Tank.

“Is he your bodyguard?”

“I prefer close protector.”

“Whatever, he takes punches that are meant for you,” I said sounding mean.

“Valerie, he’s never been punched on my behalf. Have you, Lee?”

“Nah, no one is jealous enough to punch this dude,” he chuckled and glanced at Flynn.

Flynn smirked knowingly, “Jealous no, mad…maybe. I wouldn’t put it past Valerie to swing a punch at some point. She sure as hell gets mad enough sometimes.”

“I’d have to feel something for you. I don’t.”

“Well, Valerie. I don’t think that’s strictly true, but I’m not going to push that button right now. The main thing we need to focus on is getting you strong, babe.”

PROLOGUE

The Puppy Eyes

My life was perfect.

I had the perfect shoes and the perfect friends and I lived in the perfect house. My nails were perfect and my hair was perfect (except on Sundays, it was always windy on Sundays) and I had the perfect clothes. My lips were a perfect red and my hair perfectly straight. My eyeshadow was perfect, my hips were…okay, and my waist…well…also okay. Nothing was wrong in my life.

But then there was Jack.

Jack was a problem.

He needed to go. I mean, when you’re dead, you’re dead! I had told him this endlessly. Somehow, Jack didn’t get it. I mean, I felt sorry for the guy. Sure. Being stuck between this life and the next. But just because I found him, does that mean I needed to keep him?

I think not!

Sadly, when Jack got that look in his eyes, that weary, almost teary (if his tear-ducts worked) look, I melted. I just couldn’t send him away. Not even Jack knew where he would go after he died.

Would he, like, die? As in — dead, nada, kaput, finito, gone, no more? Bye bye, sayonara, ciao, hasta la vista baby and all that?

I couldn’t have that on my conscience. No way.

I lay on my bed, wondering what to do about him. “Jaaaaaaack,” I hollered.

“Jaaaaaaack!”

Still no answer.

“Jack!”

Jack…materialized.

His eyes rolled down to the ground. He was making those puppy eyes again. “Jack, I told you not to do that. I told you not to play on my sympathies.”

His puppy eyes became worse.

His skin was gray and, well, dead.

“Oh, brother,” I said. “I have to do something about you. If mom finds out I have another ‘imaginary friend’ — at my age — well, I’d die of embarrassment. But, like, really die. Not like you.” I wondered about this. Would I die? Was Jack a freak accident, or did all people live on like him? Think of the cemeteries…

The idea excited me somewhat.

“What would you have me do, Miss Kira?”

“Knock off the Miss Kira crap. I told you it’s just Kira.”

“Yes, Miss Kira.”

The dead. There’s just no reasoning.

“Fine, Miss Kira it is then.” Rover barked like a lunatic in the garden. No one else might be able to see Jack, but I was sure my dog could.

“I have to do something about this,” I mumbled.

The Rat

Mike knocked on the door before I had time to leave the house. Mike was the guy I thought (at the time) was perfect.

“Who is it?”

“It’s me, baby.”

Baby, urgh — I wasn’t his baby. I dated Mike because he was the quarterback, because girls are supposed to like the quarterback, because it’s just so darn perfect to be seen with the quarterback, like we’re brainwashed into thinking these things from the first romantic doll set mom buys us.

This was my previous life.

“Mike.”

“Uh-huh. Gonna let me in?”

So you can try rub me up and then complain when I don’t let you? This, dear reader, was the big problem with Mike. The second we first kissed, his hand went way too far south for me to be comfortable — and I pulled back.

Mike suddenly wasn’t so perfect.

“Uhm, I was just on my way out,” I said.

“Kira? C’mon, open the door.” He sounded upset. “Is there someone in there with you?”

Boys. As if.

I didn’t know much about love (nothing, actually) but I knew this wasn’t it.

“Uhm, now’s not the time, Mike.”

“C’mon, Kira, what’s going on?” He banged harder.

When in doubt…lie. I opened the door a crack. “There’s a dead rat in the house, Mike. Been here for days. I gotta go get some detergent and stuff to handle the stench.”

Mike stepped back. He peered through the crack of the door.

“It’s really bad,” I said.

“I’ll drive you.”

“I’m afraid the smell” — I stuck my armpit to my nose — “has found its way all over me. I’ll drive myself.”

“O — okay. Fine.” And then he grinned like he wanted something. “Later? My place?”

Urgh. “Uhm, sure…er…later. Not sure when though.”

“Six.”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. According to girls at school, he was apparently so damn good looking — theoretically. But for me personally, he did nothing. Moved nothing. Twisted nothing. “Look, I gotta go, Mike. I gotta — ”

“Kira.” His eyes grew stern. “You’ve been avoiding me…”

Bingo! Well done contestant number one! And what have you won? A brain!

I tilted my head. “Mike, look, this…rat — I need to deal with it. We’ll talk later, okay? Bye.” I closed the door, not waiting for an answer, and peered out the peep hole. Mike hung around for a second, shoulders wide and eyes glaring straight at me through the door. Could he see me? Did he know I was looking at him?

He kicked something off the ground, and I had the distinct impression he mouthed the word Bitch before leaving. But I wasn’t sure…

The Mack

“Roll down the window, Jack.” Jack was recently dead, so he still had a smell about him. (Which only I could smell…)

I had purposely skipped breakfast. Maybe Jack would help me lose weight. I was (still am) a little wide, although it had never stopped guys flirting with me. I know how to dress.

But I could be skinnier.

Lucy Rogers was skinny. All bones and no boobs.

Charlene Carverton was a babe. Cheerleader. Big chest (which she pushed out generously with a push-up — if only guys knew). Toned thighs. Charlene only dated college boys (back then), which I still think is pretty gross for a girl her age.

“He’s not for you,” Jack said out the blue.

“Hmm?”

“This…Mike — he’s wrong for you, Miss Kira.” For all Jack’s faults (mainly, being dead), he has a good heart. Factually, probably it’s why I kept him around at first.

“You think I don’t know that?”

“Then why don’t you dump him?”

I braked at a stop sign. Looked left and right. “Because I’d look like an idiot. I flirted with him and showed interest, and one kiss later I can’t stand the sight of him.”

“So dump him.”

“It’s not that simple. Kids at school — they can be vicious. I have to let it fade slowly. If I drop the bomb on him, I’ll never hear the end of it through senior year.”

“And you care?”

Yes, I did. Forget Guantanamo, schools are rough. “You don’t understand, Jack. Maybe school was different in your day. But in mine, well, we walk through metal detectors.”

“Schools weren’t too different in my day.” I noted the sadness in his voice.

“You okay?”

“I’m dead.”

Right. “You miss…your life?”

Jack shrugged. “I like being with you, Miss Kira. And I don’t remember much of my life. I think I’m in limbo.”

“Limbo?”

“Yes, like I have some unfinished business. If only I could remember…what…it is…” He scratched his head.

“Any ideas?”

“Well, it can’t be love. If it were love, I’d be a vampire. That’s who teenage girls fall in love with these days.”

“A vampire? That’s just what I need — two undead beings stalking me.”

“I feel I have something to do around you, Miss Kira. I don’t know what, but something. Something important.”

I looked over at him. “Me?”

I was still looking at him when I missed the stop sign.

The Mack truck drove straight into us.

I tense at his words, at how far from the truth they are. “I haven’t always. There have been times where fighting was the furthest thing from my mind.” If only he knew how far I’d taken things, he wouldn’t be sitting here complimenting me.

“Don’t be daft, of course you are. You’re here, aren’t you? And you just pledged your undying love to me.”

“I did no—” I stop talking abruptly when I glance up and catch his teasing grin. “You’re annoying.”

“It got a smile out of you though.”

I bob my head gently in agreement, thankful that the change of subject stopped me revealing the one and only thing Blake doesn’t know.

REVIEW

Not Enough is one of the most emotional…yet realistic novel I have ever read!

Mia Hoddell has brought my attention to the emotions faced by introverts, and how they must or might have felt whenever people tells them to go out and socialise. People think that introverts are shy and isolating themselves, and the most common phrase that comes out of their mouths, or should I say most of us, would be, “You should go out and socialise more!”

We do not realise in saying that, we are only causing more harm to them. If your personality is not, and never has been an introvert, you would never have understand how they must have felt. Even if you are think you are the closest friend.

Neve Colvin. The girl who thinks that she will never be accepted for who she is. The girl who tried her best to please her mother, only to have her confidence and heart shattered.

Neve’s mother is the one person I would love to have screamed in her face for causing so much harm to Neve. She doesn’t think or care about Neve. The only thought that probably includes Neve is how she ungrateful she thinks Neve is and that Neve should socialise more. She never STOPPED to think about the harm she has caused Neve.

Seriously, the entire time I was reading Not Enough, I wish Neve actually stood up to her mother. It’s not right, to be turned down at every turn! That my readers, is when I am so glad that Blake exists! I guess you could say he was the light in Neve’s darkness? ^_^

No amount of words will ever describe how thankful I am to know that Blake stuck by Neve’s life! She deserves someone like Blake, instead of her own mother poisoning her. Her mother don’t deserve a daughter like Neve!

This novel is so beautiful it makes my heart cry so much! From the struggles Neve face, I have learned a valuable lesson. Sometimes when you’re facing your inner demons, it is hard for people to stick by you. Yet for Neve, Blake was there for her. This is a novel, not just about two people finding love, but also about how one finds her salvation in another.

Highly recommended for readers to read this wonderful novel!

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he do that is so special? What makes them special to you?

Jack, my baby. This character made my heart bleed.

Although he’s been a sex slave since the age of nine, Jack is still innocent in so many ways. All he’s known his entire life is slavery.

Jack’s life changes dramatically when River buys him.

Both Jack and River are recovering from their pasts. River is trying to make up for all the wrong her own father done, and Jack is learning how to live.

Watching Jack grow was very emotional. He is a fighter and he’s taught me a lot.

Jack will stay with me for a long time, because of his innocence and strength.

Jack~

Every part of my body throbs with an aching pain. It hurts so much that I can’t sleep. I don’t dare put on any of the clothes Master and Mistress Ryland brought earlier in the evening, it will hurt my raw skin too much.

Sophia managed to put on a light dress. She’s currently sitting on the side of the bed, staring at me. She tilts her head, thinking hard on something.

Growing up with Sophia, I know everything about her. I know she’s lost much more of herself over the years than I have, and that’s saying a lot, seeing as there’s nothing left of me.

I wait, knowing she’s about to speak her mind.

She brings her feet up onto the mattress and folds her arms around her shins, resting her chin on her knees. She keeps her eyes on something outside the window, when she says, “It feels different here. Master and Mistress Ryland seem nice.” She looks at me and smiles. I don’t know how she manages to smile. I just want to die! “I think we’ll be happy here.”

I turn my back to her and grumble, “In order to be happy I actually have to care about life.” I’m done caring. I cared about David and those feeling were used to control me. Caring for someone only makes you vulnerable. I’ll never place myself in such a position again.

I hear someone come into the room and I don’t even bother to see who it is. Something is placed on the table between the two beds and then a soft voice says, “What’s this I hear of you wasting my soup, Son.”

I glance over my shoulder, but the movement only causes me pain. I watch as an elderly lady pulls a chair closer to the bed I’m on.

“My mama always said; waste not, want not,” she goes on talking. Her eyes are a vibrant blue and her hair grey with a purple tinge to it. “Now I’ve brought you another bowl of soup and you’ll eat every last drop. I’ve also brought you some pills for the pain.”

The painkillers get my attention. I struggle into a sitting position, my eyes never leaving the woman. Trust no one and expect anything.

“I’m Miss Ella and that’s what you’ll call me. Don’t even try to call me Miss E, I’m nobody’s missy. My mama gave me the name Ella and I expect you to use it.” She scoops a bit of soup up and then blows on the broth before she brings it to my lips. The action reminds me of Momma. She used to do that too, so I wouldn’t burn my mouth.

I take a few bites before Miss Ella asks, “What’s your name, Son?”

I don’t answer her. I don’t want to be here and I don’t want to get friendly with anyone.

Sophia clears her throat, “His name is Jack.”

Miss Ella smiles at Sophia. “Thank you, dear, and you are?”

“I’m Sophia.”

Miss Ella feeds me until the bowl is empty and my stomach full. I want to cry with relief when she places the painkillers in my mouth. I quickly swallow them down with some water.

“My room is the one right by the stairs. If the pain gets to be too much come wake me.” She gathers the dishes and then gives me and Sophia each a pointed look. “You need to eat all your food so your bodies can heal. There’s a lot of work to be done. Everyone works here to earn their keep.” An icy ripple spreads down my spine. Miss Ella looks at Sophia. “As soon as you’re up to it you can help me in the kitchen.” And then she looks at me. “River says you’ve been born with a green thumb. That’s a good thing because no one around here likes to garden, and I’m too old to be playing with flowers. We can do with some color around here, so as soon as you’re better you can fix the gardens up nicely.”

She looks pleased with herself. “Now get a good night’s rest and I’ll see you in the morning.”

I can go on gardening here? Miss Ella said nothing about sex. Come to think of it neither did Mistress and Master Ryland. That doesn’t mean anything! As soon as we’re better they’ll put us to work. After all, Miss Ella said we have to earn our keep.

REVIEW

Once you start Saved By Her, you won’t be able to stop!

There is no going back once you start reading this Monster novel!

This is the first novel that I have read from dark romance author, Michelle Horst, and her writing has blown me away! It’s so addictive that I find it impossible to stop!

I have so much raw feelings and emotions right now because, Saved By Her is my first novel that I have finished in under an hour! It takes me at least two hours to finish reading a novel but this? Saved By Her?

IT’S TOO BEAUTIFUL!

This is the kind of novel that will break your heart so much that only weeping in silence would be able to express how you feel. Not sobbing out loud, wailing or crying, but weeping in silence as you find out how Jack and Sophia has suffered at the hands of the people who make them do the things they do.

River and Jack are the two people that makes me cry so much. What Jack and River has been through; the only thing Jack has known in his life, the things River do to give back for what her father has done, my heart weeps for them. In so many ways, Jack is innocent.

His innocence is the one thing that attracts me the most. I have never read about any characters in any novels with someone like Jack. Physically, he has lost that innocence. Yet mentally, he is innocent in so many aspects, almost like a child. That child-like innocence makes me want to hug him so tightly and it almost broke my heart when River and Jack had that one fight.

River might not have been through what Jack has, but the things she saw, did and done, she too, makes me want to hug her so badly. River is a strong woman, but only because her past had made her that. She’s like Jack. Both of them losing their innocence yet at the same time, keeping some parts of it.

Saved By Her is a wonderfully well-written novel, both emotionally and story wise. I’m definitely looking forward to more of the Monster novels and Michelle Horst’s books! This novel is highly recommended for fans of suspense romance novels and Pepper Winter’s Monsters in the Dark series!

1) What/Who/When/Where/How did your inspiration for The Angel Trilogy came about?

I wanted to publish a book. I began writing this story 2.5 years ago. Initially it was 1 book called “to serve and protect. I even had the ISBN for that title. One day I just knew this would be a series. And the names literally just came to me.

2) The Angel Trilogy are literally filled with plot twists. So how did you get so much ideas from? Movies, tv series you watch? Or music and books?

I’m a huge action movie buff. I love movies. I also enjoy writing things that maybe you wouldn’t normally read. I don’t prefer the “typical” boy meets girl HEA. I like danger and drama. I imagine what would happen in every circumstance and go from there. I also enjoy the shock factor!

3) I find it really exciting that Evan Young is a secret agent of sort! So hot-and-badass agents, sexy bikers, sinful musicians or intense billionaires? ^_^

4) Who do you think would be able to pull of the characters in The Angel Trilogy? 🙂

Oh that is a great question! I think if I could get a bit of the Rock and Channing to play Evan that would be fabulous!! For Natalia I would say a cross between Angelina and Jessica Biel. I see Jennifer Gardner playing Abby.

5) Who or which authors and books series have inspired you to write down the story of Abby and Evan? Or did the idea of their epic love was something you had in mind for a long time?

I really had this story in my head for a ling time. I hadnt read anything like the angel trilogy before then. I wanted Epic and unbelievable! And I think that’s what I ended with.

6) Did you ever had the thought to take a break from writing? What pushed you on? 🙂

Oh yes every single day lol. Its hard to maintain an hone 4 children and a full time job on top of writing and promoting. And trust me, to get your name out there as an indi autho you must promo alot!! But i love to write, its my passion so that pushes me on.

This book is a beautiful masterpiece! One of the best novel I have read in 2015!

I have never read such an emotional novel like Our Sins! The most dangerous, sweetest and intense romance between Evan Young and Abigale Hayes makes The Angel Trilogy one of the hardest series to let go after Our Sins!

Our Sins is truly one of the most amazing novel I have ever read for a conclusion to a series! I cried so much (okay, not literally but it was definitely emotional!) for what Abby and Evan went through and there was just so much emotions spilling out from the author’s words and writing!

Well, if there’s one thing I was unsure of before, I am most definitely able to tell you this now – Kimberly Blalock loves torturing her characters and readers with plot twists!

Our Sins is literally, and I do mean LITERALLY, filled with plot twists! I had absolutely no idea what the next page is going to be like! I honestly thought Our Sins would be a happy novel filled with love and marriage since it is the final book telling Evan and Abby’s story.

I was wrong. Oh, so wrong!

Our Sins is the epitome of emotional and plot twists elements in a book!

Abigale Hayes is so strong. She may be physically smaller but mentally? She’s definitely stronger than most people. Evan Young’s emotions, oh god, they turned on the waterworks. It was so painful to read each and every word on Evan’s emotions!

Our Sins is definitely my favourite book in The Angel Trilogy! I can’t wait to read Kimberly Blalock’s next novel and honestly?

I WILL READ WHATEVER THIS AUTHOR WRITES!

About the author:

Tina Traverse fell in love with writing at the age of eight when she wrote her version of the bible story, The Good Samaritan, for a homework assignment.
